The Archie Comic That Followed Me Home. 🗯️

Last month, I wandered into a comic book store and stopped in front of a shelf filled with Archie comics.

Growing up, I’d hide under the covers with a flashlight just to finish one more issue. More than once, I stayed up too late reading and paid for it at school the next day. Back then, there wasn’t another task waiting or a schedule to manage. There was only the next page.

Standing in that store brought back a version of myself I had not thought about in a long time.

It made me think about healthcare practice owners who give so much of their time to the practice that the things they enjoy can start getting pushed aside.

A hobby becomes something you’ll get back to later. A vacation still includes checking email.

The practice was supposed to support a life. The life was not supposed to disappear inside the practice.

I bought an Archie comic.

It wasn’t the reason I walked into the store.

It was the reason I left smiling.

A former office manager pleaded guilty to three counts of wire fraud after embezzling more than $7.8 million from two medical practices between 2015 and 2024.

According to the Department of Justice, he processed payroll at the first practice and issued himself extra payments, sometimes recording them as bonuses. He also used the practice’s bank account to pay personal credit card bills. After leaving that practice, he became office manager at a second medical practice, where DOJ said he had sole responsibility for processing payroll. He carried out a similar scheme there, again issuing himself extra payroll payments and using the practice’s bank account for personal expenses.

The March 31, 2026 DOJ release reported that sentencing was scheduled for July 16, 2026. The release does not report a sentencing outcome.

What caught my attention was the phrase “sole responsibility for processing payroll.

Processing payroll, authorizing payroll, and reviewing the related bank activity are separate responsibilities. My attention goes to what happened outside the payroll processing role. The DOJ source does not tell us how those responsibilities were assigned outside his role or who had visibility into the extra payments through the payroll records or bank activity.

Who was in a position to compare the payroll approved for payment with the amount that left the medical practice’s bank account?
