I know that your primary business is helping the health and wellness industry with outsourced accounting and financial management, however as a medical spa owner in Spokane, Washington. I’m feeling overwhelmed and on the brink of burnout.
As a father, husband, brother, friend, and owner of a thriving medical spa, my days are a whirlwind of responsibilities. To top it off, I’m about to open a second location, which adds to my already overflowing plate. The constant juggling act is taking a toll on my physical and mental health, and I fear I’m not giving my best to anyone, including myself.
How can I manage my time and energy effectively to prevent burnout while ensuring my medical spas continues to thrive and my family feels loved and supported?
Regards, Brink of Burn out of a Med Spa owner
Hi Brink of Burn Out,
Congratulations to you on all of those accomplishments. It’s enough being a dad, husband, brother, friend, and business owner. Now, that second location with your med spa definitely ups the ante for the business game, and it would be totally normal to feel the weight of it and have that niggling fear of burnout.
You wouldn’t be alone in that, though. Addressing head-on those feelings is key to maintaining your well-being. Here are a few tips:
Make Self-Care a Priority: It’s in your very nature to be a father, a husband, a brother, and a friend—taking care of everyone else. But not at your own expense. After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Your health is going to come first above all, and self-care will not be a luxury; it will be necessary.
Small Pockets of Peace: Find some time each day to enjoy what nurtures you, whether it’s a quiet morning coffee, a quick flow on your yoga mat, or even a 20-minute walk. The little moments can make a huge impact.
Delegate and Trust Your Team: Opening a second location means that your medical spa business is growing, and with growth comes the necessity of a solid team. Have faith in your employees and delegate work to them. Micromanaging becomes too tiring and later becomes a source of stress that you may avoid. It is, therefore, a good idea to delegate responsibilities to employees and let them make decisions so that you are not burdened with everything. That will also lessen your load and at the same time encourage the team when they know that you trust them.
Boundaries: Setting boundaries is another way of preventing burnout. Clearly define and honor your work hours. When at home, practice the art of being available with your family. Be absolutely present with your work when you are working. Inform your family and employees when you have time and when you don’t.
Plan and Organize: Time management is key to minimizing stress. You can use planners, apps, or calendars for planning your time and tasks. Prepare a weekly plan in advance, indicating work and free hours, and always keep it in front of your eyes. An outlined plan can help you quickly manage your responsibilities without overwhelming yourself.
Professional Support: Consider getting a business coach or mentor who will support you in any challenges and trying moments in business growth. Sometimes, it may so happen that from an outside perspective, one could get valuable advice and strategies that would help you sail through the problems, which you might not have thought of. The best part is to never hesitate from counseling or therapy for coping with stress and emotions. Mental health is as important as physical health.
Encourage Open Communication: Keep the doors of communication open with your family and work team. Share your concerns, difficulties, and wins with them. Let your family in if you need more support and encourage your team to be open about ideas and feedback. Open communication will establish trust and pull everyone toward one common goal.
Embrace Flexibility: Life is quite unpredictable, and sometimes things don’t work the way you would like them to or have planned them. Be flexible—change if you need to. If a plan isn’t working, don’t hesitate to pivot and try something new. Flexibility takes away the onus on perfection and allows you to handle your roles in an even-keel approach.
Celebrate Small Wins: Success is not only for the big milestones in life; it’s about celebrating little wins along the way. Each small victory is just as significant a milestone as opening that second location. Celebrating the smaller moments along the way can really give you a leg-up in confidence and motivation.
Lean on Your Support System: You don’t have to do it alone. Tap into that support system of friends, family, or fellow medical spa owners who completely understand what you’re going through. Share the journey; don’t fear seeking help during your moments of doubt. Sometimes, knowing that your best friend is sitting right next to you and having a heart-to-heart conversation with someone in your family can be all the comfort and pep-talk you need.
Keep Your Vision in Mind: Remember why you started this journey. Recall what drove you to start working in the wellness industry and the positive impact that your medical spa has on your customers. Your vision is what powers and gives you the force to be able to achieve success.
Juggling between different roles is no doubt a challenge, but on the flip side, it is rewarding. You can only take yourself through this journey without burning out by ensuring self-care, delegating duties, setting boundaries, and getting support.
After all, taking breaks, getting help, and putting your well-being first is okay. As such, you have done a lot and if correctly strategized on you can still be very successful as a father, husband, brother, friend, and leading businessman.
Best of strength and success to you. If you need any accounting or financial management support for your medical spa, please do not hesitate to reach out
